Climbing Robot
Age: 13 – 18 Years
Task
Participants will design and build a climbing robot capable of navigating a challenging obstacle course — including both a staircase and a ramp — using only the materials provided on-site.
The mission: construct and refine the ultimate climbing robot that walks (not rolls!) and can successfully conquer all obstacles in the shortest time possible.
Climbing Robot Challenge
Parts & Materials
- Some robot parts are provided (Base, Side Body, Leg, Crank) depending on category.
- Other parts may need to be replicated using provided materials.
- Optional components can be built for improved performance.
- All materials (motors, wood, recycled materials, etc.) are supplied by Be STEM Ready.
Competition Arena
- Staircase: 3 steps (each 13–15mm high)
- Ramp: 200mm length × 45mm height
The robot must walk up and down both the staircase and the ramp — no wheels allowed.
Competition Regulations
| State Competition |
National Competition |
- Submit a video showing the climbing robot completing the obstacle course.
- Timer starts when robot enters the ramp and stops at the finish line.
- A visible physical timer must be included in the video.
- Robot must walk (no wheels or rolling).
- If the robot falls off, restart from the beginning.
- Tie-breaker: Creativity of Design.
|
- Participants must build on-site using only provided materials.
- Construction period: 1 hour.
- Each participant has 2 rounds to complete the course.
- Timer starts at “Start!” and stops when the robot crosses the finish line.
- If a part falls, it will be returned by judges (time continues).
- Judges may introduce secret missions during competition.
